Farewell to the Rocinante

Nerdz Review of The Expanse Season 6

It took me hours of binge watching during the holidays to finally arrive, but I finally made it to the farewell season of the Expanse and oh what a compelling journey it has been.  So, we find ourselves having just lost Alex in a super anti-climactic death, I mean a stroke come on! You could have at least let my guy go out in a gun battle, a bomb or get spaced something other than a stroke. Anyways, badass Avasarala and the Earthers are still reeling from Marco and his Free Navy attacks.  And the crew on the Rocinante are struggling to get along as they are dealing with the impending war and inevitable confrontation with Naomi’s son Filip and babydaddy Marco. This tension becomes even more evident after Holden literally doesn’t pull the trigger (disarms the missile) when they have the chance to take out Marco. I mean I get it, but I can’t help but wish Amos or Bobbie would have gotten to punch Holden’s face repeatedly a few times. Like come on my guy we get it you love Naomi, but Marco’s ass needed to be handled.

Now while all this is going on, we are introduced to a side story taking place on one of the colony planets, Laconia, that has alien “dogs” that can bring things back to life. All I know is with the amount of time they wasted on that story there better be a spin off or something coming. But let’s be honest who’s going to watch that spinoff because that shit was a snoozefest. Now give me a Bobbie and Avasarala spinoff or even a spinoff about Filip and I’m in.

Speaking of Filip, he finally seems to be coming around to heed his mother’s words. During the final battle when Marco’s second in command is killed, he sees that Naomi was right that Marco would never die for others but would gladly let others die for him. I mean duh Filip, but I am glad Filip finally got it and gets off the ship before it is destroyed. But man, the penance he is going to have to do to make up for all the messiness he got into behind his father.

All in all, season 6 really was a story about the belters. Drummer making the decision to work with the Inners and then helping to take down Marco ultimately leads to her being rewarded with controlling the Ring Belt which really cements the belters as finally after six seasons having a true seat at the table. Sidenote, the love I have for Avasarala and her ability to be the ultimate boss bitch.  The shade she served Holden with that perfect politician smile all while giving him a death glare with her eyes when he pulled that fast one on her; I mean can we give this woman her own show please. I Beg! But truthfully, if the series must end, I am happy with the way they ended. We got satisfying rap ups to all our favorite crewmembers and yet enough open-ended questions that if some other streaming service (Netflix, Hulu I am looking at you) decides to continue the story then what a compelling story we still have left to tell.

My final thoughts on the series, is wow. I would definitely recommend this series to all of our Nerdz out there.  The world that was built in this series was amazing and the characters and their development throughout the series was some of the best I’ve seen in a while. Also, shout out to all the badass women in this series, I mean from Avasarala, Bobbie, Naomi, Drummer even the side characters like Pastor Anna and the documentarian journalist Monica all were fierce, strong, highly intelligent and capable women who held their own and didn’t take any shit from their male counterparts. Kudos, to the actors and whole production team because man I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Rocinante. Farewell for now!
